The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is currently constructing improvements for State Route 266 (Jefferson Pike) in Rutherford County. The project, which stretches from SR 102 (Nissan Drive) to east of Interstate 840, consists of various safety improvements, including roadway widening, for approximately 3.9 miles.
Jefferson Pike consists of two segments – an urban minor arterial within the Town of Smyrna and a rural major collector. The east-west route provides direct access to the Town of Smyrna and I-840, as well as commercial, residential, and recreational areas. Both Smyrna and Rutherford County have experienced an immense amount of growth that far exceeds the statewide average. The existing two-lane roadway cannot safely and efficiently serve current and future traffic demands.
The purpose of the planned project is to relieve congestion, address geometric deficiencies, and support future economic development in the area.
Current Status: The project is under construction.

History and Background
The existing, primarily two-lane route consists of two segments – an urban segment and a rural segment. The planned design for each segment, as well as additional improvements, are outlined below.
Segment 1: from Nissan Drive to east of the Stones River Bridge
This urban segment will consist of four travel lanes (two in each direction), largely separated by a raised 14-foot concrete median that becomes a left turn lane at intersecting roads. It will include 5-foot bike lanes and 6-foot sidewalks on each side.
A new bridge will be constructed over the Stones River.
Segment 2: from east of the Stones River Bridge to east of I-840
This rural segment will consist of four travel lanes (two in each direction), largely separated by a raised 14-foot concrete median that becomes a left turn lane at intersecting roads. It will include 12-foot shoulders on each side.
The bridge over I-840 will be widened to include four travel lanes (two in each direction) with an 18-foot center turn lane and 12-foot shoulders on each side.
Intersections
The planned design also includes the modification of one existing traffic signal at Nissan Drive and the installation of three new traffic signals at Hickory Grove Road, the I-840 East access ramps, and the I-840 West access ramps
