Occupational Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities Statistics

Information collected and disseminated by the division is used by safety and health professionals, policy analysts, employers, and researchers and aids in identifying work hazards and high-risk industries and occupations. This, in turn, leads to promotion of safer work practices, improvement in safety equipment and identifies new areas for safety research.

Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses

The Labor Research and Statistics Division conducts the Annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) from a random sample of public and private sector companies in Tennessee. The data collected from this survey is used to produce the occupational injury and illness rates for industries within the State of Tennessee as well as providing demographic and case characteristic data for work-related injuries and illnesses that result in days away from work or days of job transfer or restriction. The survey is conducted in conjunction with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor.

Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries

The Labor Research and Statistics Division also collects data on work-related fatalities and produces a yearly Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI). The Census compiles the most complete and verifiable count of fatal occupational injuries in the United States. It includes all types of workers (wage and salary, self-employed or volunteer) and includes fatal work-related injuries that are investigated by all entities such as the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and local or state police departments.
