The Road Inventory Office forms part of the Long Range Planning Division at the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). The office is tasked with the management and upkeep of TDOT’s road inventory using the Tennessee Roadway Information Management System (TRIMS), E-TRIMS and other associated software packages and applications. One of the main goals of the office is to ensure that TRIMS data and any other data inventory is of superior quality and can be used in any scenario to aid in decision making. The office collaborates with various partners, consultants and other professionals in achieving its goals.

Road Inventory Office tasks include:

  • Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) - The Road Inventory Office along with partner agencies coordinate the process of HPMS data collection, calibration and submission to the FHWA.
  • Traffic Data - TDOT collects traffic data in order to assist in highway transportation planning and design. This information is also a requirement for HPMS reporting. Some of the usual data being processed includes Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) and Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT). The office is required to systematically store, analyze, and ensure data integrity.
  • E-TRIMS – E-TRIMS is TDOT’s main portal for transportation-related data. It is an Oracle and web-based platform which is managed by the Road Inventory Office, and it supports the easy retrieval of roadway information to assist in proper decision making. E-TRIMS compliments the TRIMS database. A new version of E-TRIMS was recently released to better handle the increasing demands for data.
  • Data Requests - The office assists agencies and individuals in aggregating and compiling TRIMS-related data. In order to request TDOT TRIMS highway data, click here to complete the relevant  form.

Traffic Maps and History indicate AADT information and point locations of traffic monitors on related Tennessee roadways. AADT reports are generated using temporary and permanent counts collected during the calendar year.
