STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR PHIL BREDESEN
REGARDING SENATE PASSAGE OF THE LONG-TERM CARE COMMUNITY CHOICES ACT OF 2008

Nashville – Today the state’s plan to expand access to home and community-based services unanimously passed the Tennessee Senate. The “Long-Term Care Community Choices Act of 2008” will provide new options for home and community-based services and allow a greater number of people to stay at home for long-term care needs.

In his State of the State address in January, Governor Phil Bredesen marked this as the year to deliver on his promise to expand alternatives to nursing homes for elderly and physically disabled residents. These changes to the TennCare program, the state’s largest single payer of long-term care services, will make better use of current funding by providing additional services to more people.

Bredesen released the following statement in response to today’s action by the Senate:

“I commend the members of the Senate on the unanimous vote to give more Tennessee seniors a chance to receive long-term care services where they want them the most: at home. This fundamental change in the way TennCare handles long-term care will provide more choices and simplify access to care for our seniors and their families.

“This long-anticipated step to bring more options to seniors and adults living with disabilities has been a remarkable bi-partisan effort with broad community and industry support. I thank Lowe Finney for sponsoring this initiative in the Senate and urge the House to also act on the passage of this bill. It’s simply the right thing to do for Tennessee families facing care-giving needs.”
