Nashville, Tennessee --- The Department of Safety has opened a new Driver License Station at 641 South Main Street in Jamestown. The station, which began serving customers on Wednesday, November 1, is one of seven that will open across the state in the next 90 days. The other locations will be in Fayette, Hamilton , Obion, Robertson, Rutherford and Shelby Counties.

Department of Safety Interim Commissioner Gerald Nicely said, "We're glad to provide this new resource to people in the area. At the same time, work is underway to find properties where permanent stations can be constructed in these counties. Our long-term goal is to see that every Tennessean is no more than 30 minutes or 30 miles from a driver license station."

The new Jamestown DL Station is open Tuesday through Friday, 7:00am until 5:30pm. The building which houses it is a temporary location that will be used until larger permanent lease space can be built to accommodate both driver license services and the county office of the THP.

Fentress County has not had driver license services since 2002, when a roving crew of DL examiners visited the area once every two weeks. During the last year of operation, 1,700 customers were served, with examiners administering more than 330 knowledge tests and about 240 road tests.

Jamestown and Fentress County are centrally located in an area that needed better access to driver license services. This station will give people in Pickett, Overton, Morgan and Scott Counties a more convenient place to receive driver license services than the other stations in the region. Jamestown is nearly halfway between stations in Cookeville (to the west), Crossville (to the south) and LaFollette (to the east).

The Tennessee Department of Safety's mission is (www.tennessee.gov/safety) to ensure the safety and general welfare of the public. The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services. General areas of responsibility include law enforcement, safety education, motorist services and terrorism prevention.
