2005-2006 NEW YEAR'S HOLIDAY

78 - Hour Holiday Period

In Tennessee, there were nine fatal crashes resulting in nine deaths, yielding a fatality rate of one death per eight hours, 36 minutes.

Six of the fatal crashes were single vehicle crashes. Three were multiple vehicle crashes.

Four (44%) of the fatalities occurred in alcohol-related accidents.

Eight of the fatalities were vehicle occupants.

  • Six of the eight (75%) were not wearing safety restraints.
  • Three of the six were ejected from their vehicles.
  • No child passengers requiring child restraint devices were killed.

One pedestrian was killed.

HIGHEST DEATHS

During the 78-hour 1970-71 New Year's Holiday period, 19 people were killed in Tennessee traffic crashes yielding a fatality rate of one death per 4.1 hours.

LOWEST DEATHS

During the 78-hour 1982-1983 New Year's holiday period, 8 people were killed in Tennessee traffic crashes yielding a fatality rate of one death per 9.8 hours.

The 2006 - 2007 New Year's holiday period will begin 6 p.m. Friday, December 29,2006, and will end at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, January 1, 2007. This will be a 78-hour holiday period.
