TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE PROVIDES ANALYSIS OF
JULY 2007 COLLECTIONS
NASHVILLE, Tenn.– July 2007 collections of the Tennessee Department of Revenue were $859,250,614, an increase of $24,782,254 or 3.0 percent over July 2006 collections.
Sales and use tax collections totaled $608,432,877, an increase of $17,236,096 or 2.9 percent over the July 2006 collections.
Collections from the retail trade group increased 2.7 percent led by the following items:

General merchandise: up 5.1 percent

Auto dealers and service stations: up 8.9 percent

Eating and drinking places: up 5.7 percent

Food stores: up 3.7 percent

Miscellaneous retail stores: up 6.4 percent

Building materials: up 4.8 percent
Collections from the service group increased 3.5 percent led by gains in:
Collections from the non-retail, non-services group increased 3.9 percent. Items with significant changes include:
Consumer use collections were $229,998, a decline of $359,372 (61.0 percent) from July 2006.
Franchise and excise tax collections were $53,322,157, a decrease of $6,365,339 or 10.7 percent when compared to July 2006. Separately, franchise tax collections were $21,114,785, a $5,551,958 or 20.8 percent loss from last July. The excise tax collection was $32,207,371, a decline of $813,382 or 2.5 percent from July 2006.
Gasoline tax collections were $56,165,922, an increase of $2,710,634 or 5.1 percent over July last year.
Business tax collections were $3,125,811, an increase of $1,552,284 or 98.7 percent over July last year.
Privilege tax collections were $31,545,963, gaining $1,170,369 or 3.9 percent over the prior July's collection.
Gross receipts tax collections were $12,219,342, an increase of $5,189,899 or 73.8 percent over the collection of July 2006.
TVA in-lieu-of tax payments amounted to $21,114,561, an increase of $2,770,308 or 15.1 percent.
Motor vehicle fuel collections were $18,041,523, an increase of $1,093,381 or 6.5 percent compared to July of last year.
Inheritance and estate tax collections were $5,709,659 a decrease of $1,263,057 or 18.1 percent from July 2006.
The Department of Revenue is responsible for the administration of state tax laws and motor vehicle title and registration laws established by the legislature and the collection of taxes and fees associated with those laws. The Department of Revenue collects approximately 92 percent of total state tax revenue. During the 2006-2007 fiscal year, the department collected $11.0 billion in state taxes and fees. In addition to collecting state taxes, $1.9 billion of local sales tax was collected by the department for local governments during the 2006-2007 fiscal year. Besides collecting taxes, the department enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially in an effort to encourage voluntary taxpayer compliance.
