Tennessee’s agritourism season is in full swing. Thousands of people will visit pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and apple orchards looking for décor, wagon rides, festivals, and all sorts of fun right up through Halloween. However, it’s not over after October.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – More than 120 Soldiers assigned to the Tennessee Army National Guard’s 230th Signal Company returned home to Smyrna, Tenn., Oct. 14, after a year-long deployment overseas.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Approximately 120 Soldiers with the Tennessee Army National Guard 230th Signal Company, out of Nashville, Tenn., are scheduled to return home Saturday morning from a year-long deployment overseas. The Soldiers were tasked with providing IT support to U.S. Troops in seven different countries: Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Syria, Qatar and United Arab Emirates.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Department of Veterans Services Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder recognize the service and sacrifice of Staff Sergeant Michael Nelson of Antioch. Nelson was assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment at Wheeler Army Airfield in Hawaii. Two 25th Aviation Regiment UH-60 Black Hawks were involved in a night time training exercise on August 15 when the flight crews lost contact with each other. Recovery efforts off the coast of Oahu revealed evidence of a crash with no survivors. Nelson was 30 years old.
”Staff Sergeant Nelson was prepared to serve and support others and lost his life while training to do so,” Haslam said. “We extend our condolences and prayers to Michael’s wife, child and siblings.”

Education Commissioner Candice McQueen announced the results from the second year of the Read to be Ready Summer Grant Program, which provides funding to educators to lead tuition-free, literacy-focused summer camps for students in need across the state. In 2017, about 8,000 rising first, second, and third grade students—7,500 more students than last summer—gained critical reading skills and increased in their motivation to read.

For nearly a quarter-million users of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s ‘On The Go 2.0’ smartphone app, finding a place in Tennessee to hunt, fish, boat, and view wildlife has become easier than ever. “We have put a lot of time into improving our app and we are happy to announce it is now available and free to all who enjoy our outdoors and want to learn more,” said Michael May, a TWRA assistant director.
