Goals and Objectives

The three major goals of SPF-SIG and corresponding priorities are:

Goal 1 - Prevent the onset/progression of substance abuse.

Priorities:

  • Youth and young adult alcohol use/abuse.
  • Marijuana use/abuse.
  • Cocaine/crack use/abuse.
  • Methamphetamine use/abuse.
  • Decrease risk factors/increase protective factors.

Goal 2 - Reduce substance abuse-related problems in communities.

Priorities:

  • Increase community/family/school connectedness
  • Decrease school leaving/dropout rates.
  • Decrease risky sexual behavior.
  • Decrease impaired driving deaths.
  • Decrease substance-related crime.
  • Decrease senior substance use/abuse factors.

Goal 3 - Build prevention capacity and infrastructure at the state and community levels.

Priorities:

  • Strengthen structures and formal linkages within and between state organizations and community entities.
  • Strengthen champion roles (influential and proactive individuals who are greatly concerned with current issues and events).
  • Strengthen policies and procedures of state and community agencies.
  • Strengthen the quality of planning/evaluation/reporting by community agencies.
  • Strengthen expertise within community agencies.
