Labor Research & Statistics
The Labor Research and Statistics Division conducts the Annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses from a random sample of companies (public and private). The data collected from this survey includes annual average employment, total hours worked, and injury and illness totals for the state of Tennessee. Demographic and case characteristic data are provided for work injury cases that involve one or more calendar day away from work. The survey is conducted in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Results of the survey are published each year and distributed by request, or may be found on the Bureau of Labor Statistics web page.
The Research Division also collects the OSHA Log Data Collection Survey. This survey collects occupational and illness data from employers within specific industry and size specifications. The information from this data assists OSHA in measuring its performance in reducing workplace injuries and illnesses. By identifying industries which have a high incidence rate, OSHA can then work on making these industries safer for all employees through inspections, outreach, and consultation?
The Research Division also collects work fatality data known as the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI). CFOI collects and publishes work-related fatality information from private and public sector employers as well as self-employed workers.
CFOI compiles the most complete verifiable count of fatal occupational injuries in the United States.
