Fitness Center Discount Participants List
Suggestions from the Department of Consumer Affairs:
- Make sure the health club you want to join is registered. All for profit health
clubs are required to be registered with the Tennessee Division of Consumer Affairs and
must display a Certificate of Registration. If in doubt, contact the health club in
which you are interested.
- Call the Tennessee Division of Consumer Affairs to ask if there have been complaints
filed against the health club in which you are interested.
- Be aware that you have three days to cancel a health club contract and receive a full
refund of monies invested. You are required to notify the health club by certified
mail if you decide to cancel.
- Avoid paying in advance for long-term memberships. If you pay for your membership
in advance, you may lose your money if the health club goes out of business before your
contract expires.
- Be skeptical of any offers of a discounted rate and free time if you join today.
Some clubs are here today, gone tomorrow.
- Be cautious if you have to sign the contract today. Be alert when faced with
high-pressure sales tactics.
- Be wary of signing long-term contracts. You are responsible for paying the cost of
the full term membership, even if you decide to drop out after a few visits. Also,
be aware of any cancellation fees. Always read the entire contract before you sign.

Fitness Center Tips
- Are the Staff members qualified?
- Do professional staff members have the appropriate educational background and or
certifications?
- Do specialty staff have appropriate credentials (athletic trainer, aerobics instructors
etc.)
- Are staff members CPR Certified?
- Are there adequate staff in the exercise and activity areas?
- Are staff members friendly and helpful?
- Does staff provide new member orientations for the equipment and areas in the facility?
- Are the facilities and equipment adequate?
- Based on your personal fitness goals does the facility have the necessary: strength
equipment (weight machines, free weights etc.)
activity areas (aerobic studio, gym, track, pool etc.)
- Are programs scheduled at time convenient for you?
- Is the facility and equipment clean and well maintained?
- Is there adequate and safe parking?
- Is child care available if necessary?
- Does the facility offer adequate programming, (aerobics, step, yoga, etc.)
There are many different types of health and fitness centers. Some are single
focused, i.e., weight lifting or aerobics only, while others offer a full array of
services. Which type is best for you depends on your needs and interests. The
facilities listed in this brochure have chosen to provide all State employees and
participants in the State Group Insurance Program a discount off their regular member
price and/or off their initiation fees. The discounts vary widely. To receive
the discount, contact the facility directly, identify yourself as a state employee or
member of the program. If questions arise ask to speak to the manager.
