F&A’s Mission Statement
“The Department’s Reason for Existing”

To provide continually improving financial and administrative support services, in partnership with public and private agencies, which enhance state government’s ability to improve the quality of life for Tennesseans.

The principle of Leadership requires that all employees understand exactly what their organization does and why. The Finance and Administration mission statement helps us focus our work towards a common goal.

Our mission statement defines our existence as an organization. It provides us with an understanding of how each employee’s function is tied to a greater purpose. In essence, an effective mission statement answers four basic questions:

  1. What services does the department provide?
  2. Who benefits from these services?
  3. How do we provide these services?
  4. Why are these services necessary?

Answering these questions in a meaningful way provides a great challenge, one that requires insight and understanding. As Finance and Administration’s leadership developed the mission statement, the answers slowly emerged. Finance and Administration provides financial and administrative support services (the what) to public and private agencies (the who) in a continually improving partnership (the how) that improves Tennesseans’ quality of life (the why).

In providing “financial and administrative support services,” Finance and Administration ensures that all departments and agencies have an environment where they can function effectively and maximize their resources.

By working “in partnership with public and private agencies,” Finance and Administration provides advisory and consultation services to other state agencies.

By providing “continually improving” services, Finance and Administration reiterates its commitment to the Continuous Improvement philosophy. As a leader in state government, the department seeks to eliminate as many barriers as possible and to find new and better ways to achieve its mission. Each agency and department of Tennessee state government has unique responsibilities, but we all share the same ultimate mission: “to improve the quality of life of Tennesseans.”
