Harkening back to the long-standing Gaelic tradition of “First Footing” as an outdoor beginning to meet the New Year, Tennessee State Parks will be kicking off 2013 with a series of “First Hikes” at each park. Every Tennessee State Park will host its own special hike on December 31, January 1 or January 2 to welcome the New Year. Join us New Years Day at 10 AM for a hike at Big Hill Pond State Park. We will walk across the Dismal Swamp Boardwalk and up to the Observation Tower where there will be refreshments and an opportunity for a picnic lunch that participants bring on their own.
Then there will be two options. You may return to the trailhead for a 3.5 mile total or continue with State Naturalist Randy Hedgepath for an additional 2.5 miles around the Tuscumbia Trail before returning to the trailhead. Those doing the longer walk will have about a 6 mile walk with lots of nature information along the way. This is a 2 mile hike on Meeman-Shelby's Bike Trail to the Woodland Shelter, the first structure built on the park in 1937. It is a flat paved trail through the forest, so baby strollers and wheelchairs are welcome. Ranger Samantha Cox will talk about various points of interest, anything from pertinent park history to useful plants, invasive plant species, and native wildlife. The Healthy Hike Trail at Pickwick is one of the newest additions to the park. Funded by a Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation grant, the trail is paved and most of its length is closed to vehicle traffic. Its close proximity to the Inn (less than 50 yards south of the main Inn entrance) gives our visitors a convenient and secure recreational opportunity. The trail is 0.7 mile long and meanders through the heart of the park. A walk here will take you through mixed hardwood forests and open fields where many bird species make their homes. There are picnic tables all along the trail and it passes right by the new playground. The trail then proceeds to 'the Circle' where families have enjoyed the magnificent view of the river for decades. Meet at the Park Inn lobby. Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park in Limestone (Greene County)

Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park. Meetup at Crockett Cabin.
Meet with park staff and volunteers for a brisk walk through the park and through history. We will gather at the Crockett Cabin beginning at 11:00 AM and at noon depart on a 7/8 mile hike along the Limestone Creek. During the hike the area's rich natural and historical resources will be the subject of interpretation. Hikers should dress for the weather and wear shoes suitable for hiking. Before and after the hike we will serve hot wassel and cookies in the cabin for as long as supplies last. Join us as we welcome in the New Year in true Tennessee State Park Fashion.
In case of rain we will bypass the hike and simply enjoy the fellowship, refreshments and perhaps some stories of the areas rich history. In case of heavy snow or icy conditions, the hike will be cancelled. Meet up with Park Manager Eric Hughey for a 5 mile hike. The hike will explore the island and learn about the ecology and history of Fort Loudoun. Dress for the weather and wear shoes appropriate for hiking. There will be coffee and hot chocolate after. Hike begins at the Park visitor center at 1pm.

Frozen Head will be hosting the annual 1st hike on January 1st, 2013 @ 10:00am. Visitors / hikers should plan to meet at the park visitor center at 10:00 am. We'll car pool to the Panther Branch / Debord Falls Trail Head and begin our hike from there. The hike will last approximately 2 - 3 hours as we make our way to the Emory Gap Waterfalls. The entire hike will cover approximately 2 1/4 miles and is rated a moderate hike.
The park staff will conduct this hike rain or shine. Heavy rain we'll hike to Debord Falls only. Severe weather, thunderstorms, etc. the program will be cancelled.

Meet at The Bay Point Loop Trailhead. Trailhead located in the upper parking lot at the marina. The Trail is 4.5 miles in length. Park Ranger Jeff Nicholson will be leading our FIRST HIKE of the new year. A short program will be given about Harrison Bay and then the hike will begin. Wear warm clothing and sturdy foot wear. Start the New Year on the right foot by participating in the "First Hike" event at Panther Creek State Park on Wednesday, January 2nd at 10:00am. We'll meet at the Spoone Shelter then hike along the majestic Point Lookout Trail to the highest elevation in the park. This moderately strenuous hike offers amazing views of Lake Cherokee and the surrounding ridges. Please dress warm and wear sturdy shoes or boots for this event.
