Easy Steps to a "Green" Office

 

REDUCE:

 

• Utilize e-mail

• Print fax reports weekly rather than after each fax

• Publish company or business phone directories on the intranet

• Route memos and magazines rather than separate copies for each employee

• Buy refillable pens and mechanical pencils

• Make publications and documents available on the internet

• Utilize reusable lunch bags, utensils, napkins, and plates

• Bring extra reusable coffee cups for guests and meetings

• Post forms on the intranet

• Use refillable calendars

• Use fax "post-its" instead of a fax cover sheet

• Use digital cameras

• Turn off lights and equipment when not in use

• Enable the "energy-save" function on computers

• Use cloth rags for cleaning rather than paper towels

 

REUSE:

 

• Swap extra supplies such as binders, hole punches, and stationary supplies with other employees or offices

• Put new labels on file folders

• Reuse nametag holders from conferences

• Reformat computer diskettes

• Use interoffice envelopes

• Participate in "Green for Good" programs such as holiday card recycling, eyeglass and coat collections, cell phone collections for domestic abuse victims

 

RECYCLE:

 

• Participate in (or start) an employees recycling program

• Buy re-refined motor oil for vehicles

• Promote "Green Purchasing" when buying supplies

• Begin inkjet and toner cartridge recycling

• Recycle fluorescent light bulbs
