** New Federal Rule affecting Ethylene Oxide (EO) Sterilizers for Hospitals and Clinics **
On December 28, 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency made final a rule regarding National Emission Standards for Hospital Sterilizers that emit Ethylene Oxide (EO). The rule requires EO Sterilizers to operate with the use of an Air Pollution Control Device (APCD) or a best management practice of only sterilizing full loads. Sterilizer units are required to be in compliance by December 29, 2008 or if a new source within 180 days from initial start-up. For more information see SBEAP’s EO Sterilizer page.
