American Recovery & Reinvestment Act

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the stimulus package, Tennessee is set to receive education aid funding, including dollars directed to areas like Title I, Individuals with Disabilities and proven education reform initiatives. Final dollar allocations will begin to be provided in March 2009.

On March 7, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced that $44 billion in Recovery Act funding will be available to states in the next 30 to 45 days to help drive crucial education improvements and results for students.

Reports

These reports detail information on the status of Recovery Act funds and implementation of the Recovery Act in Tennessee schools. ARRA 2009 IDEA AwardsAcrobat file (.pdf)- The Tennessee Department of Education has released funding under the ARRA for Individuals with Disabilities (IDEA). These allocations represent approximately half of the IDEA funding that will be available to school districts and demonstrate significant funding for programs that help ensure children with disabilities, including ages 3-5, are provided services that meet their needs.

These allocations represent the total amount of Title I funding that will be available to school districts. These dollars demonstrates significant funding for programs that help students most at risk, and schools that have high concentrations of students from families that live in poverty in order to help improve teaching and learning.

These allocations represent funding for districts to meet the special needs of students who are homeless. Child Care Development FundExit TDOE website- The Tennessee Department of Human Services has received funding for the Child Care Development Fund through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. These federal dollars will be used for a child care scholarship program for low-income working families who are not eligible for existing child care assistance categories, such as Families First (Tennessee’s Temporary Assistance to Needy Families or TANF program). All state-licensed child care agencies(centers, group and family homes) are being invited to participate in this program, including those licensed through the Tennessee Deparment of Education. Tennessee Announces Grants Available for School Nutrition Cafeteria Equipment

ARRA School Nutrition Cafeteria Equipment AwardsAcrobat file (.pdf)

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides a one-time appropriation to Tennessee of $2,275,738 for grants to school food authorities participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) for equipment assistance. 

To be selected for this grant, your school food authority must:

  • Submit a system summary with schools and equipment prioritized
  • Submit one application per piece of equipment, per school
  • Operate the National School Lunch Program
  • Have 50 percent or more of its students eligible for free/reduced price meals
  • Have the ability to spend the money within three months of receipt
  • Justify the degree of need of the equipment
  • Show current operating balance for the SFA
  • Identify focus of the requested equipment
