Reading First in Tennessee

Reading First in TennesseeThe United States Department of Education Office of Elementary and Secondary Education has awarded a Reading First grant to the Tennessee Department of Education. The Office of Reading First in Tennessee is housed in the Division of Teaching and Learning, Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Local Education Agencies (LEAs)/schools who met the selection criteria had the opportunity to write a Reading First subgrant for children in grades kindergarten (K) through three (3) who are experiencing difficulty in reading. Subgrants were awarded on a competitive basis.

Improving instructional practices which will improve student achievement is an essential component of Reading First.  Reading First (Title 1, Part B) is the literacy cornerstone of No Child Left Behind.
