Q: How do I apply for a job with the State of Tennessee?
A: Visit the Career Service Employment "Home" page at http://tn.gov/dohr/employment/career.html for a summary of the steps in application process.
Q: What types of jobs are available with the state?
A: Information is available at the Department of Human Resources web site to help you to identify the currently open jobs that may be of interest to you. Click on Search Job Openings from the menu on the left side of the Career Service Employment Information Page to begin a search of Current Openings, Promotional Openings, or to conduct a Customized Job Search for a Career Service job. Using the Customized Job Search feature, you may conduct a job search based on the criteria you specify (e.g., occupational group, salary requirements, county location). If you select the Skills Search option, you will find lists of jobs that are grouped by a common characteristic (e.g., high school and no experience, college and no experience).
Q: What happens after I submit my application?
A: For each job classification you apply for, your application will be evaluated to determine whether you meet the minimum qualifications (e.g., education, experience) required for the job. If your application is approved for a job classification requiring a written test, you will be notified with testing instructions. For most job classifications, testing is not required. Instead, a score is calculated for you based on a rating of your education and work experience. You will be notified of your rating score within a few weeks following the submission of your application (or approximately one to two weeks after the closing deadline for applying).
Q: What if I need special accommodations when taking the tests?
A: Applicants with impairments which affect their ability to participate in a written, computer, or performance test may be eligible for an alternative test. For more information, call 615-741-0441 or Tennessee Relay Service at 711.
Q: I've completed my application and taken the tests. How does the rest of the hiring process work?
A: When you receive a rating score or you pass a written test (if applicable) for a particular job title, your name is placed on a list of eligible applicants for that job. The list of eligible applicants is used by State agencies when filling Career Service position vacancies. Career Service positions must be filled from among the top five eligible applicants who appear for the job interview and are willing to accept the position.
The job interview is an important part of the employee selection process. Hiring supervisors are responsible for ensuring that job interviews are completed in a timely manner. Job interviews are usually conducted in the county in which the position is located. Costs associated with travel to and from interviews are not reimbursed by the State of Tennessee. Additionally, job offers generally will not include reimbursement of relocation costs.
Q: How do I apply for an Executive Service Job?
A: The Department of Human Resources does not process applications for Executive Service jobs. To apply for these jobs, you should contact the particular department in which the Executive Service position of interest to you is located.
