Basic Training Programs


Pre-Service Programs


The Tennessee Correction Academy delivers Basic (or pre-service) training to six major categories of newly appointed Department of Correction personnel.

Correctional Officers must complete six weeks of security-oriented training prior to assuming full-time duties at their respective institutions.  Topics include firearms qualification training, self-defense, inmate supervision, mechanical restraints, interpersonal communication skills, personal searches, cell/area searches, inmate rights, First Aid/CPR, and report writing.

Correctional Counselors must complete two weeks training in institutional procedures, sentencing laws, caseload management, crisis intervention, treatment planning, inmate classification, parole issues, and individual counseling techniques.

Treatment and Support Staff including medical staff, mental health professionals, chaplains, recreation personnel, food service personnel, maintenance staff, industry/farm supervisors, and other support personnel attend two weeks training.

The Tennessee Correction Academy provides continuing staff development each year for over 25 categories of Department of Correction personnel including:

Individual course offers are changed each year in response to needs assessed by the system.
