On Thursday, September 23, 2004, several hundred guests were invited to the Tennessee Correction Academy for the unveiling of the Tennessee Department of Correction's memorial to fallen correctional employees.
These guests, including family members and descendants of the fallen, current and former employees, and other dignitaries, reflected on the importance of the Memorial's placement at the Academy. Commissioner George M. Little said the following about the memorial.
"The sacrifices made day to day by correctional professionals are sometimes small and unnoticed but we should never forget those who have made the greatest sacrifice."
The memorial was funded by private donations totaling over $32,000, from correctional professionals throughout Tennessee, to remember and honor all those who lost their lives in the line of duty and those who serve every day to keep faith with the citizens of the State, in performing that duty.
On May 26, 2006, Commissioner George M. Little addressed an assembly of guests gathered to honor the Department's most recently fallen employee, Wayne "Cotton" Morgan, a Brushy Mountain Correctional Complex employee who lost his life attempting to prevent an escape. Officer Morgan's family was present for the ceremony as well as dignitaries from throughout the Department,. Commissioner Little said Officer Morgan is sorely missed by the entire "extended family of Correction".
