Assistant Attorney General | Financial Division

The Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter represents all State executives, officials, departments, boards, agencies, and commissions in matters arising from their public duties. Such representation includes participation in litigation, transactional matters, and giving day-to-day legal advice to a wide variety of State entities. The Attorney General's Office employs approximately 200 attorneys organized into 16 legal divisions within 5 sections.

About the Financial Division:

The Financial Division is housed within the Financial and Regulatory Section of the Attorney General’s Office. This Division provides legal services for much of the State’s business-related activities, representing numerous agencies that deal with issues of government financing, procurement, taxation, banking, economic development, legal gambling, and insurance and securities regulation. Division clients include the Department of Revenue, the Department of Commerce and Insurance, the Department of Treasury, the Comptroller of the Treasury, the Department of Economic and Community Development, the Department of Finance and Administration, the Department of Financial Institutions, the State Building Commission, the Department of General Services—including STREAM and the Central Procurement Office—the Office of the State Architect, the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System, and the Sports Wagering Council.

Job Overview:

The Financial Division is seeking an organized and detail-oriented attorney that will provide quality legal representation to state agencies regarding financial and regulatory matters including but not limited to insurance and securities, legal gambling, banking, taxation, and economic development. The candidate should have the ability to work as part of a team and explain complex legal issues to non-attorneys.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate and Tennessee bar admission or ability to apply for admission without examination
  • Strong understanding of contract drafting, review, and negotiation
  • Strong writing skills and attention to detail
  • At least 4 to 8 years of practicing law
  • Real estate law experience and litigation experience a plus
  • Experience with government procurement and bid protests
