The Commission will endeavor to raise the standards of firefighting personnel who engage in its certification and training programs by enabling Tennessee firefighters to be better prepared through training courses facilitating the skills and knowledge necessary to save lives and property, and to vigorously promote firefighter safety, efficiency, decorum, and ethical considerations throughout the certification process.
The Fire Fighting Commission is responsible for the certification of volunteer and paid firefighters in the State of Tennessee. The Commission also administers the Educational Incentive Pay Program for paid fire fighters in Tennessee.
There are over 300 fire departments enrolled in the Commission's programs serving in excess of 15,000 fire service personnel in Tennessee.
The Commission is comprised of nine members appointed by the Governor. Each member's appointment is for a six year term. Two members of the Commission are selected from a list of nominees submitted by the Tennessee Professional Fire Fighters Association, two members are either associated with an all volunteer firefighting unit or are not engaged as a professional or volunteer firefighter. In addition, one member is to be at least 60 years of age and one member is to be a member of a racial minority. Each of the three Grand Divisions are represented on the Commission.
