The health of animals is tied
closely to the health of humans, both from the standpoint of adequate
nutrition and the control or elimination of infectious diseases in food
animals and people. The greatest threat to the productivity of Tennessee's animal industries is the
impact of disease on our herds and flocks. The Tennessee Department of
Agriculture is the common denominator between state and federal regulators,
private veterinarians and livestock industries. The department's involvement
is a necessary component to ensure a healthy, growing animal industry which
contributes to the health and prosperity of all Tennesseans.
The Division of
Regulatory Services – Animal Health partners with the United States
Department of Agriculture to carry out programs aimed at preventing,
controlling and eradicating certain infectious or communicable diseases of
livestock and other domestic animals. Activities include administering
eradication programs for brucellosis, tuberculosis, scrapie, and pseudorabies
along with the control program for equine infectious anemia. Animal
health also provides oversight for the National Poultry Improvement Plan in Tennessee. The animal health unit
is also charged with the responsibility of enforcing the laws and rules
regulating interstate and intrastate movement of animals. The office
also serves as the lead state agency for Emergency Support Function 16,
coordinating animal housing and care during emergencies. As part of
this function, animal health is collaborating with Tennessee Emergency
Management Agency, USDA, and a number of state and private
agencies/organizations to meet the needs of all types of animals in the event
of a local, state, or national disaster.
Animal health import
entry requirements for animals to enter Tennessee or any other state may be
obtained from the United States Department of Agriculture's State Regulation
Retrieval System at any time by using a touch tone phone and calling
1-800-545-8732 to follow the voice response instructions.
