Concentrated animal feeding
operations (CAFOs) are large-scale animal production facilities where many
animals are raised or maintained, where feed is brought to the animals, and
where wastes accumulate in a small area. Farms that are defined as
CAFOs must be issued a permit in order to operate. The Tennessee
Department of Environment and Conservation issues these permit.
However, these permits are only issued after a Nutrient Management Plan and
other application materials have been submitted to and approved by the
Tennessee Department of Agriculture.
The information
contained on this site attempts to provide some explanation of the CAFO
permitting program in Tennessee, and to equip an applicant with all the
information and materials they would need to put together an application.
