Larry Maxwell, Assistant Commissioner for Grants and Administration

Ellington Center Iris GardenLarry Maxwell has served as the department's chief fiscal officer for more than 40 years, providing counsel to 12 commissioners of agriculture.

In addition to ensuring the financial integrity of programs and services, he also provides administrative oversight of the Commodity Distribution program, which distributes USDA surplus foods to schools and charitable organizations. And, he directs the work of the Water Resources program, which provides federal and state financial assistance to help landowners protect soil and water resources.

Larry joined the department after serving two years on active duty in the U.S. Army. He also retired with the rank of Colonel after more than 24 years of service in the Tennessee Army National Guard. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Larry holds a bachelor's degree in Accounting from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tenn., where he was a two-sport athlete in varsity basketball and baseball.

He is a 1985 graduate of the Tennessee Government Executive Institute, and he is a native of Baxter, Tenn. in Putnam County.
