The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) is working with school systems in Tennessee to ensure that product related to the recall is promptly identified and removed. Based on information from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), there has been no specific food safety issue identified with this product and no illnesses have been reported. These steps are being taken as a precautionary measure. USDA's actions in this case represent one of many safeguards that are in place to protect our food supply. TDA continues to believe in the safety of, and is committed to, distributing quality, wholesome products to Tennessee's schools and other institutions. Only about 20 percent of the typical school lunch plate is from USDA surplus commodities of all types, and beef would represent an even smaller amount. TDA is aware of no school lunch shortages as a result of this recall.
